A Brief History of Lynnwood, WA
Before American settlers arrived in the Lynnwood area, the Snohomish people used it for summertime activities like gathering berries, cultivating roots, hunting, and fishing. Loggers got to work in Brown’s Bay in 1860 and the settlers arrived two decades later, and the original land claim of the first settler is now Pioneer Park.
Most of the local industry was logging until the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway arrived in 1910 and it caught the attention of real estate speculators. The Puget Mill Company established Alderwood Manor and marketed the town as a place where city folk could enjoy country farm life, even creating a demonstration farm to show new residents how to raise crops and chickens. The operation shut down in the Great Depression and the Pacific Highway shifted economic growth away to Scriber Lake.
It took until 1959 until for Lynnwood to become officially incorporated, after one failed attempt a decade prior. With incorporation came municipal services, a public park, new streets, a water system from the Alderwood Water District, and eventually a civic center complex.
